Most homeowners do not buy plywood often, and the carpenter or contractor may have strong views on what to use. It helps to understand the basics so that you can check that the quote and the delivery match.
Start with the room
| Room or item | Usual starting point |
|---|---|
| Kitchen | BWR, or marine near the sink |
| Wardrobe | MR in dry rooms, BWR on external walls |
| Bed and tables | MR or BWR, depending on the room |
| Bathroom vanity | Marine or BWR with sealed edges |
What to ask your carpenter
- Which brand and grade are in the quote?
- What thickness for the carcass, shelves and back panel?
- Which laminate (design code) for the shutters and inside?
- Are the edges banded or sealed?
Buying materials yourself
Some homeowners buy the materials directly to control the quality. If you do, ask for a clear list from your carpenter: material, grade, thickness and number of sheets. The calculator can give you an indicative check. Read the plywood buying guide for homeowners.
