Marine plywood is made to withstand prolonged exposure to moisture. In Indian specifications it is covered by a dedicated marine plywood standard (IS 710), and it is bonded with a phenolic glue that is designed to survive boiling-water tests. The name comes from boat building, but in interiors it is mostly bought for kitchens and wet zones.
When marine plywood is worth the extra cost
- Kitchen base units, especially around the sink and dishwasher
- Bathroom vanities and utility cabinets
- Furniture on balconies or in semi-open spaces that are still covered
- Ground-floor or sea-facing installations where humidity is a constant problem
For a wardrobe in a dry bedroom, marine plywood is usually more than the job needs. A well-chosen BWR plywood or even MR may be enough, and the saving can be put towards better hardware or finish.
What "marine" does not mean
It does not mean the sheet is immune to water forever. Cut edges are the weak point. If water can sit on an unsealed edge, any plywood will eventually swell. Seal cut edges, finish both faces, and keep water from pooling. Also note that "marine" on a shop sticker is not proof of grade. Ask for the brand's marking and standard on the sheet itself.
How to compare two marine plywood quotes
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Brand and range | Marine ranges differ in veneer quality and price |
| Standard on the sheet | Confirms it is made as marine grade |
| Thickness | Some thin sheets arrive below nominal |
| Face finish | Matters if you are laminating or polishing |
| Rate basis | Per sheet or per sq ft, with or without GST |
