MR plywood is bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin. The "moisture resistant" tag means it can tolerate normal humidity in a living space, not water contact. It is the most economical structural plywood grade, which is why it shows up in so many beds, wardrobes and shelves.
Good uses
- Wardrobe and loft carcasses in dry bedrooms
- Bed boxes, headboards and side tables
- Shelving, TV units and study tables
- Partition frames and back panels where laminate covers the surface
Where to avoid it
Kitchen base units, anything near bathroom walls, balconies, and ground-floor installations with damp walls. In Kolkata the monsoon pushes humidity high for months, and MR in a damp location can delaminate or swell at the edges. If a job straddles the line, quote it in both MR and BWR and let the cost difference help you decide.
The cost-saving angle
A common approach is to use BWR for the wet or exposed parts of a job, and MR for the rest. A kitchen's base units in BWR and its wall units in MR is one example, as long as the wall units are not above a window that gets wet. That is a decision you can make unit by unit with your designer.
