HPL stands for high pressure laminate. Layers of paper soaked in resin are pressed together under high pressure and heat so that they bond into a hard, dense sheet. Many decorative laminates used in furniture are manufactured this way, which is why the term appears so often. Some products, such as thicker "compact" laminates, go further and are made as stand-alone panels.
Why it is chosen
- Resists scratches, heat and daily wear better than paint or thin foils
- Easy to wipe clean
- Available in a very wide range of designs
- Works on kitchen shutters, counters, wardrobes, office desks and wall cladding
Things to check
HPL is a family, not one product. Thickness, surface treatment, and recommended uses vary by brand and range. A sheet intended for vertical surfaces may not be intended for horizontal, high-wear tops. Ask the brand's own literature or ask us to confirm with the brand before you order for a demanding job.
Fixing it properly
A good laminate still fails if the bond is poor. Use a suitable adhesive, a clean, flat base board, and press evenly. Round or soften sharp edges, since hard corners chip. For long runs and large panels, laminating both faces avoids warping.
For finish choices, see matte and glossy options, or go back to decorative laminates.
