Plywood Buying Guide for Furniture Manufacturers

A workshop wins on consistency. Standardise what you buy, test what arrives, and plan what you use.

Furniture workshops lose money in three places: rejected boards, wasted offcuts and delayed deliveries. A buying routine fixes most of them.

Standardise

  • Pick a small set of grades and thicknesses per product line.
  • Write them into a purchase specification.
  • Use the same brand and range for each grade, where you can.

Test on arrival

  • Check markings against the order
  • Measure thickness on several sheets from each delivery
  • Check flatness and edges
  • Reject at the door rather than in the middle of production

Control wastage

Plan cutting layouts for 8 x 4 ft sheets. Track sheets used per product. The calculator gives a starting estimate for typical items, and your own history will be more accurate over time.

Plan repeat supply

Share your monthly list with your supplier. A standing quote is easier to manage than daily negotiations. If your demand varies, share a minimum and a maximum.

Laminates and edge details

Order laminate for a batch of products together. Buy edge banding in matching colours at the same time.

Common questions

Should I split orders between two suppliers?

Some workshops do, to protect against stock-outs. Keep specifications identical so quality stays consistent.
