Interior fit-out uses plywood differently from furniture factories. Instead of cutting hundreds of identical parts, a site team cuts boards to suit walls, ceilings and alcoves, often in thinner sizes and with a finish applied on site. The board needs to be easy to cut and fix, stay flat, and take paint, polish, veneer or laminate evenly.
Typical interior jobs
- Wall panelling: thinner sheets, around 6 to 12 mm, fixed to a frame or directly to the wall with proper treatment
- Partitions: boards on a timber or aluminium frame, in thicker sheets for stability
- False ceilings and cove details: lightweight, thin boards with good flatness
- Built-in storage: carcass-grade 18 mm board
- Back panels and linings: 4 to 6 mm, often hidden
Moisture on site
A board fixed directly onto an external wall can pick up moisture from the masonry. In Kolkata that is a serious risk. Use a damp barrier, leave an air gap where the design allows, and choose a grade like BWR for those positions. Read our notes on residential interiors and commercial interiors for the practical differences.
Finishing
If the final surface will be a veneer, decorative laminate or paint, ask for a sanded face with minimal patches. Rough faces cost more to finish than the saving on the board.
For designers and contractors
